How to Get Rid of Wasps and Yellow Jackets

The sound of insects buzzing in an outdoor space is expected. But when that buzzing isn’t coming from flies or beetles, it could spell danger. Wasps and yellow jackets, unlike bees, don’t mind stinging and will do so as many times as they see fit. Additionally, they’re relatively aggressive and territorial.

Insect control in Brunswick, TN, is necessary to keep your backyard free from these pests. What can you do to get rid of them or prevent them in the first place?

Apply Spray Treatment at Night

Just like people, insects are less active at night. When you break out the wasp spray, do so when temperatures are at their coolest — after the sun goes down or before it comes up. Spray with the wind, not against it. Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, gloves, and a mask.

Remember, these insects will not take kindly to you spraying their nest with poison, and they may act accordingly. Keep in mind that wasp nests will nearly always be above ground, but yellow jacket nests can be above or below ground.

Don’t Swat Them

Despite your desire to smack a wasp or yellow jacket, don’t! If they think you’re being aggressive, especially yellow jackets, they’ll be more likely to sting. If they do sting, yellow jackets in particular will release pheromones to draw in more yellow jackets.

If you feel like you’re being overrun, leave the area, reach out to professional insect control in Brunswick, TN, and let the experts handle the problem.

Don’t Leave Trash Lying Around

Raccoons aren’t the only creatures that want to rummage through your garbage. Wasps and yellow jackets are attracted to strong odors that can lead them to sugars or proteins. That rotten apple you threw away? Prime attractant.

Cover Your Food and Beverages

It’s not just trash that wasps and yellow jackets seek out — it’s also fresh food and drink. If you’re eating outside, keep your food under mesh covers and clean up any spills immediately.

Maintain Fruit Trees

Speaking of sweet foods, don’t keep fruit trees right next to any entrances or walkways. Make sure to pick up any fallen fruit and dispose of it quickly so it doesn’t lure in dangerous insects.
